Midlands SQL Server User Group, being held in the offices of Wragge & Co solicitors at 55 Colmore Row in the centre of Birmingham on Thursday 22nd August 2013.
Session 1: Beginners Guide to SQL Server - John Martin
Session 2: Beginners Guide to Business Intelligence - Alex Whittles
6.00pm – 6:30pm Meet & Greet
6:30pm - 7:30pm Beginners Guide to SQL Server (John Martin)
SQL Server, its a database right? Well yes, kind of.
In this session we will look at SQL Server, what it is and what you need to know in order to get it up and running. Starting from the very beginning we will install SQL Server and perform a basic setup showing the various components and what they do. From here we will go into setting up a database with some tables, views and other objects before configuring backups and some other basic maintenance tasks. By the end of this session you will be able to go away and setup a new SQL Server or look at the ones you support already in a different light and know what to check to make sure they are OK.
7:30pm - 8:00pm Break & Food
8:00pm – 9:00pm Beginners Guide to Business Intelligence (Alex Whittles)
Alex will be covering a high level overview of Business Intelligence within the SQL Server toolset, and then run through a few simple demos of SSIS (Integration Services), SSAS (Analysis Services) and SSRS (Reporting Services).
We'll try and make it interactive, so if you have any specific questions then bring them along and we'll see if we can cover them in the time.
We'll be putting on food for the event, so please do register so we know numbers. If you then can't make it we'd really appreciate it if you'd unregister and/or let us know.
Wragge & Co's office is at 55 Colmore Row, Birmingham, B3 2AS, just around the corner from the Old Joint Stock pub.
If you need any further details or have any requests for this or future Midlands SSUG events, please let me (Alex Whittles) know, either on Twitter (@PurpleFrogSys or @SQLMidlands) or email SSUG@PurpleFrogSystems.com
John Q Martin
John hails from the darkest depths of Mordor (aka Southampton) and is somewhat of a pragmatic and enlightened chap, what he does not know about building an army of flying monkeys is not worth knowing. In between being a bit eccentric he has to go to work as a BI Developer and SQL Server Development DBA. Having worked with SQL Server for the last six years or so in various roles ranging from Ops DBA to BI Developer, John has gained a wealth of experience over the majority of the SQL Server software stack. Currently working on a project to re-architect a system for his employer that incorporates the full spectrum of SQL Server technology from OLTP to OLAP and everything in between.
Alex is the owner and lead consultant at Purple Frog, a SQL Server Business Intelligence consultancy in the UK, and has designed BI systems used by Barclays Capital, NASA and Las Vegas casinos.
He specialises in all aspects of dimensional data modelling, data warehousing and cubes using the SQL Server stack. Alex has an MSc in Business Intelligence, runs the Birmingham SQL Server User Group and was chair of the SQL Relay 2013 conferences.
He is also a regular speaker at other events including SQL Bits, SQL Relay, SQL Saturday and SQL Server user groups.
